Coaching Director, Master Coach John Ross

A four-time letter winner from 1989 to 1993 and the most valuable player of the 1991 Aztec men’s volleyball team which went 27-4 and was ranked as high as 3rd in the Nation, John Ross returned to Montezuma Mesa in 1996 as San Diego State’s assistant volleyball coach and was promoted to the position of associate head coach prior to the 2004 season.

In his 13 seasons, Ross was heavily involved in all phases of coaching and specifically with the middle blockers. In addition, he is the director of recruiting and has several nationally ranked classes. He also ran the summer Aztec Volleyball Camp and was director of Club Pacific.

The former volleyball standout spent the 1995 season as an assistant coach for the University of San Diego’s women’s volleyball team, which finished with a 22-11 overall record. The Toreros also ended with a 10-4 mark in the West Coast Conference, good for second place. He helped lead the Toreros to the semi-finals of the NIVC Tournament.

An exceptional middle blocker during his career at San Diego State, Ross finished the 1991 campaign ranked third in the nation with a .426 hitting percentage. He was also ranked among the top 10 in the country in blocks per game. During that summer, Ross was the captain for the Olympic Festival gold-medal winning team. Despite missing the 1992 season due to knee surgery, the Chatsworth native bounced back to captain the 1993 Aztec squad, leading the team in total blocks with 127. Ross graduated from SDSU in 1993 with a degree in public administration.
